The Foundation of Craft
Barry’s formal journey began in Southampton, where he earned his City and Guilds Qualifications. His pursuit of excellence later took him to the prestigious London College of Fashion. A Career of Distinction
Barry’s portfolio is as eclectic as it is impressive. A notable highlight includes his work crafting uniforms for the crew of the iconic QE2 ocean liner. In 1992, he transitioned into entrepreneurship, launching a successful business that has provided bespoke tailoring, dressmaking, and expert alterations for both private clients and local businesses for over thirty years.
His technical range is further evidenced by his work in Bridalwear, where he designed and manufactured collections for high-street specialists using a sophisticated blend of traditional hand-finishing and modern production methods.
Education & Mentorship
In 2009, Barry expanded his impact on the industry by opening his first sewing school in Southampton. For nearly a decade, he shared his mastery through workshops in:
· Tailoring & Dressmaking
· Corsetry & Lingerie
· Millinery
His reputation as an educator led to a prestigious collaboration with the Beamish Open-Air Museum, where he worked with their Costume Department to refine and enhance their period-accurate sewing skills.
In 2019 he moved his business to Bromyard in Herefordshire where he continues to teach in the beautiful surroundings of his purpose-built sewing studio located above his haberdashery store.
Alongside his in-house workshops, Barry also hosts Residential Sewing Retreats where attendees can enjoy a full weekend away tapping into his wealth of knowledge. There are also opportunities for sewers to learn more when Barry runs workshops at exhibitions countrywide.
Theatrical & Literary Contributions
Barry’s expertise has also graced the world of stage and media. He has been a frequent contributor to various sewing magazines, sharing his insights with the wider crafting community.
More recently, he lent his talents to the touring production of Disney’s The Lion King.
